He Didn't Laugh...

We drove to Grammie's house today & my wonderful Hubby fed my Diet Dr. Pepper addiction by surprising me with a pop from McDonalds!

The first sip was so delicious...I told him my Diet Dr. Pepper was like drinking candy. It's THAT good!

So what do I proceed to do?

Pick up the cup by the lid, attempt to take a sip, and spill the whole damn thing into my lap!

My first instinct was to cry. Ice & a full pop all over my jeans, the seat, everywhere. CRAP! Luckily, the seats are leather so the clean up wasn't too bad.

Me? I rode to Austin in my undies while my jeans dried on the back seat. Yes...I did! Sorry to any 18-wheel truck drivers who saw my lap! Jeff offered to give my his jacket for my lap...but I decided to live a little wild.

After I wiped up all the pop, threw all the spilled ice out the window, & gathered myself, Hubbs said he held back his laughing. Which I greatly appreciated...but I'm sure it looked darn funny!

Don't Buy Caramels Anymore...Make Your Own!

A few weeks ago, Jeff & I were talking about Christmas traditions and he remembered homemade caramels as a special Christmas time treat. Given my limited talent in the kitchen, I wasn't sure if I could pull off Homemade Caramels or not.

The first batch didn't turn out well. I didn't have a candy thermometer, so getting the caramel to the proper temperature was a guess...and I didn't guess so well! While it tasted really good, it was way too soft and had to be dumped. I guess we could have used it for a caramel topping of some sort, but it was just easier to start all over in this case.

After getting a candy thermometer, and giving it a second try, we were really pleased with the results. I was most pleased, though, that Jeff loved them!

Check out our yummy recipe & enjoy!

Ingredients:

*1 cup unsalted butter

*1 lb. light brown sugar

*dash salt

*1 cup light corn syrup

*1 14oz can sweetened, condensed milk

*1 tsp. vanilla extract

What To Do:

*Melt butter in a heavy saucepan. Add brown sugar & salt. Stir until thoroughly combined.

*Stir in corn syrup & mix well.

*Gradually add milk, stirring constantly.

*Cook & stir over medium heat until candy reaches firm ball stage (245 on candy thermometer). This will take about 45 minutes. Make sure you stir constantly so the cooking candy doesn't burn.

*Remove from heat & stir in vanilla.

*Pour into a buttered or heavy duty foil-lined 9 inch square pan.

*Cool in the fridge & cut into squares.

We also made some Turtles with the caramel. Lay 4 pecans on parchment paper (turtle's legs) so that they touch in the center of the Turtle. Pour a tablespoon of caramel in the center, top with melted chocolate & let cool!

And it's great to get those little hands helping wrap all that caramel!

MiceCube: A Review!

A few weeks ago, I found some mouse droppings in both garages & was less than thrilled to know that we had been visited by a rodent. However, I can deal with a mouse or two outside. We back up to a big field and are surrounded by fields and a golf course...plenty of places for little critters to live!

However, when I found droppings in Jeff's office and in the laundry room behind the dryer, that was enough! Mice are not welcome in the house!

I set out to WalMart to find something to trap our guests. I didn't like my options much.

*Poison: I didn't like the idea of a mouse eating the poison and having to walk around the house before it died. What would it touch with it's poison-laden feet & poop?

*Sticky trap: Completely inhumane. Even though I don't want the mouse in the house, I also don't want to give it a death where it must starve over a period of days.

*Traditional snap-trap: I couldn't bear to find a squished mousey. And Reese is very curious...I was worried he would just need to touch it. Even though he's a big 5 year old now, the bones in his fingers are still very tiny!

Then I stumbled upon the MiceCube. This is more along the lines of what I was looking for...a live mouse trap. Something to catch them & then I can take them to a field far away and let them go.

The MiceCube is about the size of a stick of butter, and is made of gray plastic. There is a little trap door at one end, and when the mouse enters, gravity closes the door and traps the mouse. To release the mouse, you simply turn the trap upside down, the door opens and the mouse can be set free.

We set the trap according the the instructions: Put peanut butter on a little part of a cracker and place at the back of the trap. Put a little peanut butter on the outside of the trap door to leave a scent trail. I placed the traps in the places I had seen mouse droppings.

Sure enough, it only took 2 nights to trap this:

He was the tiniest little thing and had a big cracker snack before I took him far away from our house and let him go in a field!

To clean, I filled the trap with hot water & dish soap and let it soak.

We're waiting to see if any more mice come to dine. The first night the traps were set, the mouse (mice?) had licked all the peanut butter off the trap doors but didn't enter the trap. The second night, we caught 1 mouse. Nobody has licked the peanut butter off the trap doors in 3 nights now, so perhaps he was the lone mouse in the house?

I would highly recommend using the MiceCube if you've got a rodent in the house & you'd like to consider an alternative to killing it. The MiceCube worked exactly as it was supposed to!

It probably seems odd that I'm writing this review, but I was so excited at the success of our MiceCube that I just had to share!

Stupid Bird

Reese, Jessie, & I were sitting on the couch Saturday afternoon & as I looked at the cabana out back, I saw this land on the roof:

An egret or heron I believe....how pretty!

Hey, you! Don't do that!
Do what you ask?
Hey...it's still dribbling down the roof. Gross.
Stupid bird.

Can Dogs Get Divine Intervention?

Buddy is going on 10 years old, which for a Jack Russell isn't supposed to be that old. A few months ago though, all the sudden, Buddy got old. He started having trouble walking. His back leg(s) were hurting. He wasn't eating & you could tell he lost some serious weight. He kept his tail ducked and head down most of the time when he did walk, but most of the time he just laid on the couch.

We took him to the vet (no answers), we bought some spendy joint supplements (he won't eat them unless smothered in peanut butter), we put him on aspirin therapy (81mg/day), we changed to soft food mixed with dry food (worked well to get him to eat!).

He's given up his long-held post lying on the back of the couch. I brought in the dog bed to the living room so he had a soft place to rest his weary bones.

Last week, it just seemed hopeless. Nothing we were doing was helping. He would just sleep though the days, only limping around if absolutely necessary. He pooped on the floor, in front of the dog door. He hesitated for long moments before he would go up or down the small step to get in the door. I had given in to carrying him down the steps to the backyard many times a day to do his potty business.
This was no way for a spry little Jack Russell to live. Always, always, his tail was tucked, his head was hung low, his eyes were just so sad.

On Tuesday, while driving to violin, Jeff & I talked about what we were going to do. This wasn't fair to Buddy. He shivered all the time from pain. He can't be happy, & what we're doing isn't helping.

We decided I'd take him to the vet to see what our options were. Was there anything else we could do to help? Was it time to make "that decision"? I called the vet from the car & set an appointment for today (Thursday) at 7:30am. I cried the rest of the way to violin lessons. Luckily, I had on my sunglasses and Reese was watching a DVD in the car, so he didn't know I was upset. I cried harder thinking about how we would tell Reese. Austen & Jessie are older and I think they would understand better, but Reese is 5. How does a 5 year old say goodbye to his life-long Buddy?

Then comes Wednesday. Jeff & I both comment to each other about how much better Buddy looks. He's walking around!?! He wagged his tail! He came up the stairs by himself?

At the end of Wednesday, Buddy came down with some hives, but that didn't stop him at all. He wanted on the couch, so we helped him up, & then he made his way to his perch on the back of the couch. I can't think of the last time he's laid up there, where he can see everything that happens in the house.

I called the vet Wednesday evening & cancelled our appointment for this morning. Was he better, or just on an up-swing? Seemed silly to take him to the vet if he was acting like this...I had prepared the vet for a dog who we didn't know what else to do for him.

This morning....new life has been breathed into this dog! He's running, eating dry food on his own, he hasn't had any aspirin, he actually hopped onto the back of the couch himself, he played football with Reese & I (he grabs it & runs away with it when Reese drops it), he wagged his tail & did the "excited prance" that dogs do.

How did this happen?

Our poor dog, who Jeff & I both thought might be making his way to death's door, has completely turned around today.

I have no idea why. I'm just glad we have more time with Buddy, because I wasn't ready to say goodbye.

What's The Best Freecycle Item You've Picked Up?

Last week, we picked up a breadmaker!!! Thanks to my friend Holly O...I didn't even know she was the person who offered it up. We've made 3 loaves of bread so far. First one turned out flat because I didn't set the loaf size high enough. Second loaf was a white bread that turned out good. Third loaf was a 100% whole wheat loaf that was dense but still yummy.

Our next loaf will be a wheat mix...maybe it will be a little lighter & more fluffy.
Waiting patiently for the first loaf to finish baking...
"Mommy, I want to take your picture!"
"And I want to take this picture of Zoe too"

Small & Furry

Since we had to visit the pet store for refill of our saltwater jugs, and we had plenty of time, we stopped to play with a puppy while we were there. Reese tends to pick the tiny little Chihuahuas, which I'm always afriad we're goign to hurt because they're just so very tiny. This time, however, he picked this monster puppy who was in a cage WAY too small for a big puppy.

This was probably the nuttiest puppy I've ever seen! He kept nipping at Reese's heels & then if Reese would move fast, the puppy would full-out tackle him from behind. Then he'd try to bite his ears. Or his toes. Reese spent most of the time standing up on the bench in the little puppy petting room, while Jessie & I tried to help the pup burn some energy.

He really was funny...but it was quite obvious this guy had way too much energy and it was a shame he was stuck in that stupid little cage all day.
We also held bunnies, tried to pet a hedgehog (ouch), and Jessie found this baby ferret. It just curled up and went to sleep in her hands. It must have stayed there for 10 minutes, just snoozing.
And then Jessie showed me this when we got home:
With her fantastic artistic eye, she propped one of Reese's cowboy toys on her finger & snapped that fun shot. I like how her finger is in focus, but the cowboy is blurry. So creative, that girl.

Still One Of My Favorite YouTubes EVER...

This perfect video called "Mom My Ride" is still, after all this time, one of my all-time favorite YouTube videos. I swear, my car ends up looking like this more times than I care to admit...

No Way Did I Just Eat That...Did I?

One of my favorite guilt-free snacks are pickles. Any kind of pickles...sweet, bread & butter, dill, kosher, sliced, whole, mini...whatever. I love me some pickles. Even pickled okra. Just yum.

Last week, I dug into the fridge to find a jar of cold, crispy pickle slices...the perfect treat to go with my cheese. Found this jar:

And I dug in. Must have had about five or six slices. Yumm-o deluxe!

Fast forward two days, and I'm moving things around in the fridge and I see this peeking up at me:
Want a closer look? Here...
And if you still can't tell what I'm posting pictures of pickles on this blog, here's a shot with the jar open & peering down inside:
Now, I was eating pickles from this jar just two days ago. That fuzzy pickle looks like it's been growing a while. Could I have possibly consumed a fuzzy dill slice? Just gross.

I need to get one of these gadgets that my friend Holly uses.

May no more hairy pickled cukes cross my lips....

Summer Nights

One of my favorite summer evening rituals is going out in the backyard & front yard with Reese to look for "hoppers." We usually have a few toads that reside in the front & one toad that lives in the back and hangs around the pool.

Last night, when we went out, Reese found a frog in the pool, which we eventually got out after trying the pool brush, then hopping in the pool to chase the frog around the water. Turns out it was a bullfrog from the golf course ponds & could SWIM fast!

Once we pulled him out of the pool, he sat so very still in my hand...

Reese and I took a minute to compare my bullfrog to his toad. Ou can really see the difference in face structure & coloring.

We put the bullfrog in a bucket & tried taking it to the golf course to let it go in the pond, but it hopped out while we were driving the golf cart to the water & so we headed back home. I was just glad I didn't run him over!

When we were out in the front, we came upon this Mommy spider... If you look closely, you can see a bunch of white "dots" on her back. Those are all her baby spiders, and if you touch her you'll see hundreds of them scatter, only to come back to safety on Mommy's back. It's truly amazing.

Reese got really close to the spider & was "cooing" at her and telling her what a good Mommy spider she is. Such a tender hearted boy...

Fun In The Pool With Daddy

I could snap pictures all day of these two...

Friday

Reese & Mommy being silly waiting for our show at Casa Manana to begin. We were there to see Willy Wonka!
One thing that always amazes me: Of all the bazillion gene combintions possible when a child is conceived, how is it that eye color can be identical? I mean, click on the picture to enlarge it, & just look at Reese's eye color & mine. It is exactly the same. It's amazing...

When we got home, and Mommy almost ran into a tree while talking to Daddy in the driveway, Reese decided to wash his race car.

This little boy is growing up way too fast.... Here's Daddy, hard at work. I know he loves when I take pictures like this to share...

IKEA Fun!

I needed to run to IKEA (run=40 miles round trip) for a book cart & Reese jumped at the chance to come with me! There are rooms upon rooms of staged IKEA living and Reese loves to go in each pretend room and he's living or working.

He also loves the free measuring tapes, pencils, & papers that are all around! Here, Reese is measuring everything in the room, which all happened to be "80 inches."

Taking some important notes...
And check out the lunch you can get for relatively cheap! Oh YUM...

I Love My Family....Somewhat....

We went to Babe's in Roanoke for lunch today. Awesome.

Jeff had never been there, Grandma loved it when she came to town. Awesome.

Free jukebox with lots of song choices. Awesome.

I go to pick out some songs. Awesome.

Eating the all-you-can-stuff-down-your-gullet fried chicken. Awesome.

A sneaky Grandma who thinks she's really funny. Less Awesome.

Babe's waitresses coming behind you in a semi-circle, slapping a chicken hat on your head, requiring you to flap your wings while they sing Happy Birthday To You. Even Less Awesome.

Blowing out my candle on the honey-laden biscuit & knowing I'm living my wishes right now...way Awesome!!

Weekend Happenings...Finally!

Blogger finally let me get some pictures posted yesterday, and now I can share our weekend with you!!

Austen came home Friday night for Spring Break & went to Denise's since we had to get up for Jessie's games Saturday morning.

Saturday morning came early. Jess had a volleyball tournament, which meant we had to wake up at 5:30 (Jess & I) and leave at 6:30 to arrive at the tournament by the 7:00 show-up time she was given.

Knowing we had an outdoor birthday party to attend later in the day, I wasn't happy when I saw this on the car thermometer:

The plan: Jeff would stay home with Reese in the morning, I would watch Jessie until about 9:30. Then I'd come home & get Reese ready for his best friend's 5th (!!!) birthday party.

Jessie played the first game at 8:00 and did AWESOME~she is amazing at the net & her serves are getting wicked-accurate. Check out our girl in action:

And here:

I couldn't be MORE proud of her!

I ended up leaving at 9:00 since the girls had the next game off & Denise was at the game already. I always feel weird about leaving Jessie at the gym by herself...I worry about her getting hurt & what would happen if no parents were there!

As I'm heading home, our realtor calls & asks if he can show our house in a few hours. I get home & fly through the house with Jeff's help getting everything picked up and cleaned. We finish just in time to head over to the birthday party & have a great afternoon. The weather had warmed up considerably & it was beautiful outside.

The house showing was a bust...they stayed literally for two minutes & left. Apparently, our master bedroom was too small. All that cleaning & hustling for nothing. Ugh.

Around noon, Jeff headed up to the tournament while Reese & I were at the party. After the party, I took Reese up to the gym to meet up with Daddy & Denise to watch the rest of Sissy's day. Her tournaments usually last from 8:00-3:00ish, which makes for a FULL day for everyone, especially Jess!

We all ended up back home in the afternoon, and Jeff and Jess picked up dinner for everyone on their way home. Austen arrived shortly after that & we were all finally back together. I dearly miss a full house when Aus is away at college & Jess is with her mom. I know Reese completely digs having everyone home!

Of course, it's a rare occasion now when I have all 3 kids together, so I had them all get together for a picture.

"OK...everyone say cheese!" "Um, OK. Let's try again. Say cheese!"
These three bring more joy into my life than I ever imagined possible!! This picture perfectly captured our life together, so I didn't push for anymore :)

The rest of Saturday was filled with lots of Guitar Hero (which Austen brought home from college so he, Reese, & Jessie could play...what a great brother!), then his PS3 died for no reason. Jeff did some research and found out this is a common problem & Aus called customer service Saturday night. We were surprised when they answered, & very pleasantly surprised when they said they'd send a shipping box to us, & send out a new machine once they received ours. Guess it really IS a common problem.

Sunday was time to be lazy. Reese was ready to wake Aus & Sissy up at 9:00...luckily I was able to distract him long enough so that they could each wake up when they were ready.

Jeff & Austen had a big round of NFL Street Football on Jeff's PS2. Reese played with them until it was time for us to leave & see the Lewisville Lake Symphony's performance of Peter and the Wolf, accompanied by ballet dancers (I forget which ballet school they came from).

I made sure we got there early so we could get good seats & we were able to sit right in the front row by the orchestra. Reese loved watching the violins play.

The show started & Reese was glued to the stage....
After the performance, there was an "instrument petting zoo". Reese went through the line four times so he could get his hands on a cello & a violin.
